Farmdeck’s comprehensive approach to data collection integrates multiple sources to optimise pasture yield estimation. Remote sensing data from satellites and drones provide NDVI and NDRE values over time. Historical data, including pas ation schedules, is stored and accessible.
Weather data is captured through our weather stations and/or your local closest weather station. Additionally, soil data, encompassing soil type, pH, and nutrient levels, is gathered using Farmdeck’s soil moisture sensors. This robust dataset enables precise and informed pasture management.

NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index)
NDVI is a widely used remote sensing index that measures the difference between near-infrared (which vegetation strongly reflects) and red light (which vegetation absorbs).
It can be used for:
- Vegetation Health: Higher NDVI values indicate healthier and more vigorous vegetation.
- Biomass Estimation: Correlates with green biomass and can predict crop yield potential.

NDRE (Normalised Difference Red Edge Index)

NDVI measures photosynthetic activity, correlating high values with healthy, vigorous crops and abundant green matter, while NDRE enhances this by focusing on chlorophyll content providing a refined measure (for example in dense canopies where NDVI may saturate). Dry Matter
Dry matter refers to the biomass of the crop after all water is removed. High dry matter is vital for crops harvested for their biomass.
Both NDVI and NDRE can estimate dry matter indirectly by assessing the overall health and biomass of the crop. Although NDRE offers a more accurate estimation, especially in later growth stages.
